For the last few years, most conversations about AI and security stopped at "Could a chatbot leak information if someone asks it the wrong question?" That risk was real, but manageable by simply not sharing sensitive information with a public AI model.
That's not where things sit anymore. Many open-source AI systems have gone from tools that help people, to systems that can act largely on their own.
That shift matters for the same reason it matters on a job site. The old security model of setting a firewall, running an annual audit, and calling it done is no longer viable. 10 Questions for Your Construction Software Security Checklist
The good news is that you don't need to be an IT specialist to evaluate a software vendor's security. You just need to ask the right questions.
Whether you're shopping for construction takeoff and estimating software, project management tools, or anything else that touches your drawings and your numbers, ask any provider these 10 questions before you hand over your data:
- Where does my data actually live? Is it in the cloud, and what country is it kept in?
- Who can see it? Your team, the provider's team, and any outside companies they work with?
- Is my data encrypted? Both while it's being sent and while it's just sitting there?
- Is my data kept separate from other customers? Will my projects get mixed in with anyone else's?
- Is my data used to train the provider's AI?
- Is my data shared with other companies? Is it sold, rented out, or handed off to anyone outside the platform?
- What security certifications does the provider actually have?
- What happens to my data if I leave the provider? Can you get it back, and is it really deleted afterward?
- What happens if something goes wrong? Is there an actual incident response plan, and will they tell you if it happens?
- Can they explain all of this clearly?
If a provider can't answer these clearly, keep asking!
